Genshin Impact Frost Moon Exploration Guide: All Chests, Puzzles, and Secrets

Frost Moon showed up in Genshin Impact 6.7 as part of the Luna VIII update, and it’s one of those regions where the map looks small until you actually start exploring it. Islands stack on top of each other, chests hide under rock formations and behind door mechanisms, and half the puzzles don’t look like puzzles until you’re already stuck in them.

This guide walks through every subarea of Frost Moon: Dunanna Pit, Lunar Highlands, Moontide Sea, and the Dark Side of the Moon. You’ll find where the chests are, how to solve the puzzles blocking them, and which ones the in-game compass won’t even show you. There’s also a section on Frost Moon Seals, since those unlock the two Treasure Vaults hiding some of the best loot in the region.

Grab the Luna Treasure Compass before you start. It unlocks at Nod-Krai Reputation Level 3 and it will save you a lot of backtracking.

What You Need Before Exploring Frost Moon

You can’t just wander into Frost Moon. You need to finish the Pioneers quest first, which opens up the region and hands you the first batch of chests along the way.

A few things to sort out before you dive in:

  • Complete the Pioneers quest to unlock Frost Moon access
  • Reach Nod-Krai Reputation Level 3 for the Luna Treasure Compass
  • Bring a team that can deal with Frostnight Scion enemies, since several chests sit behind combat encounters
  • Keep an eye out for Geo Slimes near the Eye of Ibni-Belum — they guard some of the tougher chest routes

Frost Moon Map Layout: Every Subarea Explained

Frost Moon splits into four main zones, and Lunar Highlands is really a cluster of smaller areas stitched together. Here’s the breakdown:

Subarea Type What Stands Out
Dunanna Pit Compact, partly underground Chests sealed under rocks
Lunar Highlands Large open zone Split into eight sub-locations
Moontide Sea Coastal, mechanical Home to the Curtain-Form Lab
Dark Side of the Moon Story-gated Chests tied to quest progress

Lunar Highlands is the one that trips people up because it’s not one continuous area. It breaks down into Ungien’s Circle, Bubble Pool, the Eye of Ibni-Belum, the Underground Energy Generation Station, Nuur Stone Circle, Archaeolune Storm Research Center, Golden Hall, Skymount, and the Space Lifeform Capture Station. Treat each one as its own mini-checklist instead of trying to clear Lunar Highlands in one pass.

Frost Moon holds 73 chests total, ranging from Common to Luxurious rarity, so this isn’t a quick errand. Plan for a few sessions if you’re going for full completion.

Dunanna Pit: Chest Locations and the Rock-Seal Puzzle

Dunanna Pit is small, but small areas in Genshin have a habit of hiding one chest behind something you’d never think to check.

During the Pioneers quest, you’ll reach the upper floor of the underground Dunanna outpost. In the corridor before the western room, there’s a chest trapped under a rock. Once you’ve picked up the powers of the three moons, throw an energy bolt at the rock to break it open.

Keep going after that:

  • Descend and continue the location’s quest line — a chest spawns near the eastern teleporter
  • A third chest sits close to the platform that leads to the spaceship
  • Sweep the lower corridors on your way out, since a couple of Common Chests sit off the main path and don’t show up until you’re standing right next to them

Lunar Highlands Exploration: Chests, Puzzles, and Hidden Rooms

This is the biggest zone in Frost Moon, so it’s worth working through it sub-location by sub-location instead of trying to loop the whole thing.

Ungien's Circle Chest Route
Ungien's Circle has around nine chests on the ground level alone, mostly clustered near the central machinery, with more spread across the northern cliffs and southern platform. Start from the north, work your way around the outer ring, then finish with the chests near the center — the icons sit close together there and it's easy to think you've already grabbed one when you haven't.
Bubble Pool Puzzle
Head to the center of Bubble Pool and use the pink floating balls to climb up. At the top, you'll spot a ship. Board it, watch the memory sequence play out, and a Precious Chest appears once it's done. There's also a hidden Luxurious Chest and two Exclusive Chests here, tied to defeating a Frostmoon Scion and interacting with a cloudy bubble in the middle — none of these show up on the compass.
The Eye of Ibni-Belum
Most of the regular chests here are locked behind fights, not puzzles. You'll run into Frostlight Scion enemies, Geo Slimes, and the Precursor's Secret Source Matrix, which is basically a tanky moon-themed boss guarding the loot. Clear the Pioneers quest chests first, then do a full sweep for one extra Precious Chest.
Underground Energy Generation Station
Sits directly below the Eye of Ibni-Belum. Two chests are down here, and they're straightforward once you've found the entrance — no real puzzle involved, just easy to miss if you don't know it exists.
Nuur Stone Circle: The Dragon Puzzle
Start the Ancient Moon's Remnant side quest first. Activate all the terminals scattered around the circle, then ride the dragon up to the top of the tower. Completing this nets four Precious Chests and one Luxurious Chest, which makes it one of the better time investments in the entire region.
Archaeolune Storm Research Center
This one punches above its size. It's compact, but the chest routes involve indoor machinery, ball mechanisms, and broken walls, and the Archaeolune Storm hazard will knock you around if you linger too long in the wrong spot. Climb to the top using the transmitter and elevator, then grab the chest while dodging the storm.
Golden Hall Transit Station
Defeat the enemy guarding the Golden Hall and activate the Transit Station. This spawns two Exquisite Chests and one Luxurious Chest in one go, so it's worth doing early since it unlocks Golden Hall as a teleport point too.
Skymount and Space Lifeform Capture Station
Skymount only has two chests, both tied to the Pioneers quest and the Ungien's Circle: Power Hub segment. At the Space Lifeform Capture Station, repair the device in the gravity control room and place the pearl on the station to reveal two more Precious Chests.

Moontide Sea: Chest Locations and Puzzle Chains

Moontide Sea has the longest connected chest route in Frost Moon, and it includes a robot backtracking sequence that a lot of players give up on halfway through.

Curtain-Form Blackbody Containment Lab

This is the part of Moontide Sea that feels the least like normal open-world exploration. It’s tight, mechanical, and the chest puzzle here uses the same visual code repeated three times — miss the pattern once and you’ll end up walking in circles.

Save Kuuhenki Puzzle Chain

Save the kuuhenki from slimes at three marked points, then head back to the central island. Kill the Hydro Slimes to the north and open the chest to free the trapped creature. This chain rewards one of the Frost Moon Seals, so don’t skip it even if the fighting feels tedious.

Shrine of Depths and Remaining Chests

Unlock the Shrine of Depths on the northern island for another Precious Chest, then solve the hidden Transit Station puzzle to pick up the final three chests in the area. Moontide Sea holds three Precious and two Luxurious Chests total.

Dark Side of the Moon: Story-Locked Chests

Don’t bother coming here before you’ve finished the Moon storyline quest. Several chests are tied to quest beats, and you’ll spend more time confused by locked doors than actually collecting anything.

Once you’re cleared to explore:

  • One chest sits at Moonheart Chasm
  • A second is at Darkside Base: Transport Level

Both are easy grabs once the story gate is open. After the last chest, do one more lap around the nearby paths — a few players report a stray Common Chest tucked just off the main route.

Frost Moon Seals: How to Unlock the Treasure Vaults

Frost Moon Seals drop from Precious and Luxurious Chests scattered across the region. Collect three of the same type and you can unlock a Treasure Vault packed with artifacts and other rewards.

Treasure Site Seals Needed How to Unlock
Moontide Sea Treasure Site 3 Teleport to Curtain-Form Blackbody Containment Lab, head to the western island
Lunar Highlands Treasure Site 3 Collect seals from Ungien's Circle, Nuur Stone Circle, and Golden Hall chests

Six seals total unlock both vaults. If you’ve already been clearing Precious and Luxurious Chests region by region, you’ll probably have most of these without going out of your way.

Hidden Chests the Compass Won't Show You

Seven chests in Frost Moon don’t register on the Luna Treasure Compass at all. You either know they’re there, or you walk past them forever.

  • Ungien’s Circle door mechanism: teleport to the upper-middle waypoint, look behind you, and interact with the door mechanism to spawn a Precious Chest
  • Dark Side of the Moon Common Chest: teleport to the third waypoint in the middle of the area, go around the left path if the direct route is closed, and open the box inside
  • Bubble Pool hidden trio: after completing the Selenic Chronicles third week, teleport to the northwest waypoint in Ungien’s Circle, find Maalaus near the underground waypoint, defeat the Frostmoon Scion, and interact with the cloudy bubble — this triggers a boat sequence that ends with a Luxurious Chest and two Exclusive Chests

If you find more of these later, it’s worth keeping a personal note since new hidden chests sometimes get discovered after a patch settles in.

Fast Frost Moon Exploration Tips

A few things that’ll save you time if you’re going for full completion:

  • Clear compact zones first (Dunanna Pit, Archaeolune Storm Research Center, Bubble Pool) before tackling the bigger open areas
  • Watch for vertical markers versus surface markers in Ungien’s Circle — chests near the B1 to B4 quest areas sit at different heights than they appear on the map
  • Don’t attempt Dark Side of the Moon chests until the Moon storyline quest is finished
  • Check lifts, bridges, and small huts before leaving any area — several chest icons sit close enough together that they look like duplicates when they’re actually separate rewards
  • Save the Curtain-Form Blackbody Containment Lab puzzle for when you’ve got focus, since the repeated visual code is the main thing that trips people up

Frost Moon rewards patience more than speed. Work through it zone by zone, keep the hidden chest list handy, and you’ll hit 100% without having to backtrack across half the map twice.
