A Record-Breaking Launch
Dune: Awakening made a spectacular debut this summer, quickly becoming Funcom’s biggest success to date. At launch, the MMO survival game reached a peak of nearly 190,000 concurrent players on Steam and sold over 1 million copies in just 13 days — setting a new studio record. Today, the game maintains a steady player base of around 30,000 active users daily.
Player Retention Exceeds Expectations
According to production director Ole Andreas, player retention has been “significantly higher than expected”. This strong engagement allows Funcom to move forward with ambitious post-launch content that was originally left out of the release window.
Future Expansions Updates
The developers confirmed plans to eventually expand the universe of Dune: Awakening beyond Arrakis. Among the new locations teased is Caladan, the lush oceanic homeworld of House Atreides — a sharp contrast to the barren deserts of Arrakis. While the team did not reveal a timeline, they stressed that “so much remains untapped in the Dune lore”, hinting at long-term expansion possibilities.
Focus on Arrakis and the Fremen
For now, the primary focus remains on enhancing Arrakis — adding more narrative depth to the Fremen storyline, improving survival mechanics, and expanding in-game activities. Funcom also reassured players that its roadmap will prioritize meaningful free updates, with paid content only introduced if it provides substantial value.
