Windrose Roadmap 2026: What’s Coming in Early Access and When to Expect 1.0

Windrose launched on April 14, 2026, sold over a million copies in its first week, and peaked at more than 69,500 concurrent players on Steam within 24 hours. For a debut game from a 60-person studio in Tashkent, those are remarkable numbers.

Yet weeks after launch, players keep asking the same question: where is the roadmap? Kraken Express has been deliberately vague about dates — not because the plan is unclear, but because the studio wants to see how the live build actually performs before committing to a schedule.

This article separates what is officially confirmed from what is still open-ended, and gives you a realistic picture of the Early Access timeline and the path to version 1.0.

What Windrose Offers Right Now at Early Access Launch

Before talking about what’s coming, it’s worth knowing what’s already in the game. At Early Access launch, Windrose ships with:

  • 3 biomes — Coastal Jungle, Foothills, and Cursed Swamps
  • Around 30 procedurally generated islands with over 90 handcrafted points of interest
  • 3 playable ships: Ketch, Brig, and Frigate
  • Naval combat with boarding actions and seamless ship-to-shore transitions
  • A main story campaign estimated at 50–70 hours
  • Co-op support for up to 8 players (4 recommended for best performance)
  • Full building system, crafting, character progression, factions, and NPC workers

The base price is $29.99 on Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Stove. A $39.99 Supporter Bundle adds the soundtrack and sea shanties recorded by Sean Dagher.

Does Windrose Have an Official Roadmap? Here’s the Truth

Short answer: not yet. Kraken Express has not published a dated, feature-by-feature roadmap. What the studio has shared is a broad direction — the game is expected to stay in Early Access for 1.5 to 2.5 years and grow by roughly 50% before the 1.0 release.

The studio has been clear about why. They want to collect real player feedback from the live build before locking in a sequence of updates. A formal long-horizon schedule will come later, once the dust settles from launch.

The March 23, 2026 Steam news post is widely cited as a roadmap, but Kraken Express explicitly labeled it a work in progress. The studio warned that some items on that list could change or never ship. It’s a useful window into the studio’s priorities, but not a contractual delivery plan.

The primary channels for roadmap updates are the Steam news feed, the official site, and the developer Discord, which has around 53,000 members.

Confirmed Windrose Content Updates Coming During Early Access

These are directional commitments from the Steam FAQ, developer statements, and official messaging — not a delivery schedule. None of the categories below have public release dates attached to them.

New Biomes and World Expansion
The launch map covers three biomes. More are coming, and the Ashlands is the most clearly documented planned addition. Beyond that, no specific names or count for post-launch biomes have been officially confirmed. Each new biome is expected to bring its own resources, enemies, bosses, and points of interest.
More Ships and Deeper Naval Progression
The three launch ships — Ketch, Brig, and Frigate — are confirmed as the starting lineup. A galleon-tier vessel and new cannon types are part of the planned progression. Shared multi-crew ship roles (multiple players manning different stations on one ship) are being explored, but this feature has not been officially locked in.
Story Continuation and New Bosses
Only Chapter 1 of the story is available at launch. Kraken Express has confirmed that the story will continue through Early Access and conclude with a satisfying finale at 1.0. New bosses tied to new biomes and story arcs will come with each major content wave.
Expanded Weapons, Armor, and Build Options
The combat and gear systems will grow alongside new biomes. Expect broader weapon categories, additional armor sets, and more build variety. The studio has also signaled interest in adding new gameplay systems on top of content — not just more of the same.
Quality of Life, Stability, and Onboarding Fixes
Launch week surfaced real friction: server connectivity issues, onboarding confusion, combat complaints, and problems with chest security in multiplayer. Kraken Express has already pushed two hotfixes in the first week. Early patches will keep focusing here before the biggest content expansions arrive.

Here’s a quick snapshot of where the game starts and where it’s headed:

Feature Early Access Launch Planned for 1.0
Biomes 3 (Coastal Jungle, Foothills, Cursed Swamps) Ashlands + more unnamed regions
Ships 3 (Ketch, Brig, Frigate) Galleon-tier + additional classes
Story Chapter 1 only Full campaign with satisfying finale
Co-op Up to 8 players (4 recommended) Deeper shared ship roles being explored
Bosses & Enemies Launch set across 3 biomes New bosses tied to new biomes and story arcs
Platforms PC (Steam, Epic, Stove) Console post-1.0 PC release

What’s NOT Coming to Windrose: Features Off the Table

Knowing what won’t be in the game is just as useful as knowing what will. Kraken Express has been clear about the boundaries of the roadmap:

  • No PvP. The game is PvE-only and that’s by design. Windrose originally started as a free-to-play MMO called Crosswind with PvP elements. When the studio pivoted, PvP was cut. The team has not ruled it out forever, but there is no plan or timeline for it.
  • No microtransactions or live-service model. The buy-to-play approach was a deliberate choice. The studio decided that sustaining a live free-to-play service was beyond what a 60-person team could handle without compromising the core game.
  • No console release during Early Access. PlayStation 5 and Xbox ports have been discussed, but Kraken Express has positioned the 1.0 PC release as the prerequisite before any porting work begins.
  • No price drop. The Early Access price is explicitly positioned as a discount relative to the 1.0 retail price. All content added during Early Access is free for existing owners.

Windrose 1.0 Release Date: Realistic Timeline and What to Expect

Kraken Express has committed to a 1.5 to 2.5 year Early Access window. With the April 14, 2026 launch as the starting point, that puts version 1.0 somewhere between late 2027 and late 2028. No shorter or firmer window has been publicly committed to.

Early Access Scenario Estimated 1.0 Window
Optimistic (1.5 years) October 2027
Moderate (2 years) April 2028
Conservative (2.5 years) October 2028

The 1.0 release is expected to include roughly 50% more content than the Early Access build — more biomes, enemies, bosses, ships, loot, and the completed story. The studio also wants to add new gameplay systems, not just expand existing ones.

One important note on price: Kraken Express has confirmed the retail price will go up at 1.0. If you plan to buy eventually, Early Access is the cheaper entry point.

When Will Kraken Express Publish a Detailed Roadmap?

The studio has committed to releasing a detailed roadmap after gathering player feedback from the launch period. Based on the pattern already visible — two hotfixes in the first week, active Discord engagement, and a stated preference for player-informed planning — expect a more formal schedule to appear in the weeks or months following launch.

The sequencing will follow what the data shows. Launch-week feedback around connectivity, onboarding, and combat feel will likely shape the order of early updates more than any pre-written plan.

Where to track it: Steam news feed is the primary channel, with longer posts on the official Kraken Express site and faster community conversation in the Discord.

Should You Buy Windrose Now or Wait for 1.0?

This depends entirely on what you want from the game.

Buy now if:

  • You want a fully playable pirate survival game with 50–70 hours of content right now
  • You’re comfortable with the typical Early Access experience: patches, fixes, and a game that evolves
  • You want to lock in the lower EA price before the 1.0 price increase
  • You enjoy following a game’s development and giving feedback that shapes it

Wait for 1.0 if:

  • You want to experience the completed story from start to finish without gaps
  • Server stability and onboarding friction matter a lot to you
  • You’re primarily interested in console, which won’t happen until after PC 1.0
  • You prefer waiting for the game at its final, most polished state

A free demo is still available on Steam if you want to test the core gameplay loop before spending $30. The demo does not carry progress over to the full game, but it does reward you with a decorative item once you jump into Early Access.

Is Windrose Worth Playing in Early Access in 2026?

Windrose does not have a dated roadmap yet, but the direction is honest and the foundation is solid. Kraken Express has been upfront about what they know (50% more content before 1.0, a 1.5–2.5 year window, no PvP, no microtransactions) and equally clear about what they’re still figuring out. The formal schedule will come — and given the game’s launch momentum, there’s genuine reason to believe the studio has the community and the capacity to follow through.

For now, the best place to stay current is the Steam news feed. When Kraken Express publishes a dated plan, that’s where it will appear first.
