TBC Classic Gearing — Pre-Raid, Tier Sets & Phase 3 BiS Gear

Gearing means moving your character through the item power stages tied to each raid phase. Phase 1 opens with Karazhan, Gruul’s Lair, and Magtheridon’s Lair, which drop Tier 4 tokens. Phase 2 adds Serpentshrine Cavern and Tempest Keep, source of Tier 5. Phase 3, live now, brings Black Temple and Mount Hyjal, source of Tier 6.

Tier gear doesn’t drop as finished armor. Bosses drop shared tokens, and you exchange them for your class-specific piece at a vendor in Shattrath. Aldor and Scryer both accept the same tokens, so your faction reputation choice only changes where you turn them in, not what you get. Tier 6 works the same way through Tydormu, stationed outside the entrance to Hyjal Summit.

Raid tiers aren’t the whole story. Dungeons, Badges of Justice, reputation vendors, and crafted items fill slots that raids don’t cover well, especially rings, trinkets, and weapons. Set bonuses matter as much as item level: on Anniversary realms every tier set has five pieces with bonuses at two and four items equipped, so a 4-piece bonus often outperforms swapping in a single higher-ilvl piece too early.

Dungeon Set 3 is built from five armor slots: head, shoulders, chest, hands, and legs. The sets are tied to armor type rather than class, so anyone who can wear cloth, leather, mail, or plate can equip the matching pieces. Cloth has four different sets to choose from, while leather, mail, and plate each have three, including one general damage version alongside the more specialized ones. Pieces drop across several level 70 normal and heroic dungeons, and a handful of items are heroic-only.

Bonuses activate at two and four pieces worn, not at the full five, so you don’t need every item in the set to get real value from it. These sets stay useful well past Phase 1. Phase 3 hasn’t added any new dungeon sets, so fresh characters still lean on Dungeon Set 3 for a fast, stable baseline, and returning players use it to catch up alts without touching the raid lockout system at all.

It’s a readiness standard built around hit cap, defense cap for tanks, and enough stamina and resistance to survive early boss mechanics, not a full checklist for every slot.

Phase 3 is the current content, live since August 27, and it resets gearing priorities across every role. Black Temple and Mount Hyjal bring Tier 6 armor, new haste and armor penetration items, epic gems, Arena Season 3 rewards, and two legendary Warglaives from Illidan Stormrage. Token progression follows a set order too: gloves and helms come first from Mount Hyjal, then shoulders, legs, and chests open up in Black Temple as you push further into the raid.

Tier 5 tokens drop from five raid bosses split across Serpentshrine Cavern and Tempest Keep. Each token is shared by a small group of classes, so the player who wins the roll exchanges it for their own set piece at the Shattrath vendors. For most casters and healers, Tier 5 is the first real stat jump over Karazhan-level gear, and the 4-piece bonus is worth chasing before spending tokens on individual upgrades.

Tier 5 still matters after Phase 3 opens. Several classes keep their Tier 5 4-piece bonus active until they’ve collected enough Tier 6 pieces to switch over cleanly, since a half-finished Tier 6 set often performs worse than a complete Tier 5 one.

Tier 6 is the strongest armor set in TBC Classic, earned through class tokens from Black Temple and Mount Hyjal bosses. Tokens fall into three groups shared across specific classes: Conqueror for Paladins, Priests, and Warlocks; Protector for Warriors, Hunters, and Shamans; Vanquisher for Druids, Mages, and Rogues. You exchange your token with Tydormu at the Hyjal Summit entrance.

On Anniversary realms the set keeps the five-piece structure with bonuses at two and four items equipped. Each class gets its own named set: Lightbringer for Paladins, Onslaught for Warriors, Thunderheart for Druids, Gronnstalker’s Armor for Hunters, Tempest Regalia for Mages, Slayer’s Armor for Rogues, Skyshatter for Shamans, Malefic Raiment for Warlocks, and Vestments or Regalia of Absolution for Priests.

Token competition in these raids is heavy, since three classes roll on the same token pool for weeks. This service secures your tokens directly, so you get the full set without months of raid nights and shared loot tables.
